Seasonal Skin Care Simplified

Well cared for skin is the palette for your future.

Soothing 24hr moisture...The more mature we get, the lighter should be our makeup regimen, and the more we should pay attention to skin care, so the current wisdom goes as we age.  It’s important to act our age, and in doing so, we offer a fresher face to the world!  You might decide to give it up entirely, many women do.  I prefer a little polish, knowing I can’t erase the wrinkles of time and experience.  And really, nor would I want to!

Exfoliating is an important part of my regimen.  I do it twice a week in the shower.  Moisturizer is essential.  I like a tinted moisturizer topped off with a little loose powder.  This evens out my skin tone, I’m one of those that has the  underlying ruddiness!  I save the mascara, blush and shadow when I want to be a little more groomed, however, my usual regimen, including a lipcolor protected by lip gloss, is sufficient for most of my lifestyle activities.   I tend to stick with Chapstick brand Cherry lip gloss.  One with SPF is good for the summer when out all day!

Augment your skin care routine by wearing a sunhat while out in the sun.  Hydrate well with water.  A slice of lemon in your glass of water gives it some “juice”!  Quit smoking, as cigarettes dehydrate the skin.  An alcohol habit also dehydrates the skin.

I wear gloves outside for yard and barn chores, and also when riding.  My hands still seem to show the wear and tear!  I depend on regular use of hand cream.

I hope this gives you some ideas to simplify your routine.   If it makes you feel good, give it a try!

February is for tune-up!

Good morning, Friends!

Snow still on the ground and fog in the air!  However, birds are arriving and many horses have decided to start shedding!  I can always tell at home by the amount of hairballs my Cavvi Spaniel, Barney, leaves around the house!  Spring still arrives with all of the accompanying allergy symptoms, some years mild, some years not!

February is a great time to start daily probiotic therapy in time for spring allergies.  I started in February a couple of years ago, and when my trigger allergy month came around, I never had a symptom!  I like to give a two month trial for herbal medicinals and supplements to take effect.  Remember, longer onset, fewer or no side effects!

Daily probiotic therapy has done a great job for me with regularity, digestion, boosting my immune system, and allergy symptoms!  Make sure you pick a product with at least three different strains.  Check the label to see if it needs to be refrigerated after opening. Do yourself a favor, and get started right away!

To be or not to be. . . . .for menopause

Govanhill photoshoot at the Arches, Glasgow: LaughingEver get asked for advice?  A good friend emailed me with questions about her diagnosed osteoarthritis.  Being a pharmacist, a medical professional, I decided to help my friend, but perhaps not from the direction she was expecting.  Or at least not right away.  When we are faced with lifestyle decisions as we mature, what considerations influence the direction you take?  What do you see as your “quality of life” goal?

I cannot speak for others, but hopefully giving myself as an example, explore some philosophy behind the decisions that move our lives forward.

WP_000067Being a single working Mom, I was compelled to make some decisions regarding my  health and well being a couple of years ago.  When we make decisions about our health, that in turn influences our involvement with the people in our lives, those who have a vested interested in our lives, our autonomy going forward in our lives, and activities that we stay involved with or modify in some way.

DSCN0306I started with my weight management a little over two years ago.  As a single working Mom, the “buck stops here” so to speak.  I do not have a boyfriend or husband vested in me or my life.  I have a teenager at home, and work full time in my profession.  I manage, to a greater or lesser degree, to have a horse hobby, with two horses at home on my small acreage, friends to ride out with, and lesson work as can be managed.

DSCF3459My goal is to guard my self sufficiency as I mature in life, and continue to give my best to my daughter, and participate in my horse sport.  Being physically healthy starts with an assessment of weight management, as with proper management we can control our numbers for cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure, and ease the burden on our muscular-skeletal system.

martini anyone?I was at a crossroads, I had to make a decision, and I had to do it.  I had to step up and deliver for myself.  I went with the Dynamite 180 program, you can review my progress from the beginning.  I’ve been successful in my weight management for over two years.  Pick your plan, I’ve been successful with this one, and can apply the protocol to tune up as I go al0ng.  I have experienced in the past some weight fluctuation, and the Dynamite 180 program gives me the tools to deal and keep on track.

DSCN0327So, first, lose the weight, bring your numbers to normalcy, have better balance on your horse, take the stress off your body, eliminate much of the discomfort the extra weight causes, have more energy, and get a better night’s sleep!

Stay tuned for the next step in the journey!

Here’s to the best you can be, or want to be, for menopause!

Health affirmations for menopause

Longford River one fine summerHere we are, coming out of winter, ready to shed the extra pounds from hibernation and comfort food!  I am!  Sorted through the closet for my favorite jeans, OK, time to lose the muffintop and the accompanying extra layer of insulation!

It helps to remind myself what I want this to accomplish.  When I’m thinner and lighter, I have better balance riding my horse.  I don’t want to outgrow the saddle I just bought!  I feel like I am detoxifying my body when I tighten up my diet.  I love being lighter and thinner!

I find that it is a big help when I am involved in something I am passionate about.  For me, this involves my horse habit.  I admit, a little vanity creeps in for the sake of taking pictures with my horse looking more fit and trim!  And I feel more like myself when I’ve shed the extra pounds!

I’ve hung my jeans on the front of the closet where I can see them every morning.  I can get them zipped up, but oh, they are pinching!  My goal is to be in them comfortably by March 21st, for attending the Northwest Horse Fair and Expo in Albany, Oregon!

I’ve got my Dynamite 180 and my food protocol.  Click on the menu tab above to get yours!

Let’s tune up together for menopause and beyond!

Feel your face for menopause

Where The Rainbow StartsDuring the winter, I exfoliate more often, your face takes a hit with the winter wind and cold!  I have blonde skin that is sensitive to many products, and also tends to get blotchy red!  I keep coming back to the Arbonne Rejuvinating Cream.  It’s also light enough for hot weather use, and a little secret, I keep it in the fridge, it feels so good!  It’s perfect for all season freshness for your face!

Click on the menu tab above to check it out!

Moisturizing your face is a minimum for skin care.  Preventing sunburn always makes good sense.  Keeping yourself hydrated will reflect on the health of your skin.  Having an alcohol habit and a smoking habit will lend itself to drying the skin, compounding itself for the long term.  This is not new information!  Practice relaxation techniques so as to avoid chronic frown lines.  And remember, presenting yourself with a twinkle in your eye and your beautiful smile will be the first thing people notice!

Be your best for menopause and beyond!

Winter dry skin for menopause

Galápagos Tortoise 3, Melbourne ZooWe are on the cusp of spring, coming out of our hibernation!  Winter dry skin manifests in chapped lips, dry, flaky patches, scaly knees and elbows, what do you experience?  Working outside chaps your hands and face.  Working with paper bleeds the moisture out of your hands.  Not licking your lips is not an option!  However, it contributes to the problem!  What do you do for those cracks on the tips of your fingers and around your nails?  Those can be painful!

Here are a few tips that I have found helpful over the years, trying the latest and greatest, I come back to these products.  Consistency is key!

I keep Bag Balm on my bathroom counter.  I have a large container and fill up a couple of small containers for my purse, desk, and truck.  I massage it on my cuticles in the morning, and around the tips of my fingers.  I get those sore skin cracks otherwise, so I am very consistent, applying throughout the day as needed.  I also use it for a lip gloss, either over or under my lipstick.  I use it on my nose after blowing so I avert a sore, red, chapped nose.  It really lasts!  Comparing cost and effectiveness, Bag Balm can’t be beat!  Find it at your local discount store in the first aid aisle, ask about the small containers for refill purposes.

De-stress for menopause

DSCN0365It’s all about stress management!  How are you handling yours?  Have you identified those things that stress you?  What changes in your body do you notice when stressed?  High color?  A feeling of anxiety?  Feeling overwhelmed?  A feeling of panic?

Stress depletes the adrenal gland, our only source of estrogen production for menopause.  Stress management for menopause becomes a high priority!

What can you do when you find yourself becoming stressed?  Taking deep breaths, breathing in and out, recenters and also lowers blood pressure.  Inhale and exhale with a count of five seconds each.  Have a mantra for yourself when you find yourself in stressful situations.  Talk your way to your “good spot”!

When I inhale, I think “good in”, and “garbage out” with my exhalation.  A couple of rounds of deep breathing puts my feet back on the ground for menopause!
